  Parts are brilliant, the first and final sequences especially, and Welles plays a great antagonist, but my god, some of this feels like a student film in the worst ways possible. I know this had a troubled production and was butchered in the editing process but 1) I definitely watched a restorted version and 2) it's almost a 50/50 split between brilliance and terrible. Did the studio really reshoot half the movie? Including scenes with Welles still in them?

  Can freely admit I didn't understand parts of this due to not having the historical knowledge (like the USSR's involvement in the Spanish Civil War), but it's beautiful and I did enjoy the themes of generational trauma and mankind's relationship with nature that I did pick up on.

  Also is it just me or is there the tiniest, *tiniest* example of trans subtext here...
