JUNG_E 2023
When I watched the trailer, my expectations were: “action flick with some AI themes.” What I got was the tragic story of a scientist and the inextricable link between her pursuit of the perfect combat AI and her own personal trauma. The nature of that gruelling project changes shape dramatically, forcing her to make a choice. The exploration of how she navigates that trauma, and the ethics of AI development made for an intriguing and emotional cocktail of sci-fi sweetness. Train to Busan is great. And so is Jung_E.

10 Cloverfield Lane 2016
While unable to captivate in ways similar to its forerunner, 10 Cloverfield Lane does just enough to keep the viewer in the dark, juggling multiple theories and daring us to hazard a guess as to what's truly going on. Predictability and unresolved subplots stumped what could have been, and I had some trouble digesting Michelle's character arc and the film's transition into the final act. The Handmaiden 2016
The Handmaiden is an almost 3 hour sleight of hand, dropping the viewer in an intricate maze whilst creating the illusion that the viewer is in the driver's seat. Arrival 2016
In "Arrival", I found a thorough deconstruction of what a first contact with aliens would entail. All manner of complexities are laid bare, feeding a laborious juxtaposition of diplomacy and science. Not only does "Arrival" juggle fascinating sci-fi elements as concepts. It fully embraces them in its sequencing, creating transcendental moments. Linearity, and advocacy when freed from its innate restrictions. For a film that sets a stage for beings beyond our knowledge, it manages to be incredibly human.
