The tough and gritty script makes room for no sympathies in this extremely tense crime thriller. But what elevates this film to top tier is the impeccable location cinematography, intriguing lighting and wonderfully shot chase scenes.

Wong Kar-Wai's style is undeniable and powerful, but the narrative is undeniably sparse, especially when it comes to the romance. But by the end of the film everything is satisfyingly tied together in a way that solidifies and justifies the picture's mood.

    ★★½

It becomes quite apparent as the film progresses that Bong Joon Ho was content letting truly A-list actors run wild, and couldn't be bothered to commit much to the script. Thematic development is completely missing from this still enjoyable sci-fi romp, as it chooses to beat along a horribly generic and uninspired narrative. This, all despite the absolute softball of a concept the film could have explored regarding human cloning. I didn't need the moody comtemplation of Ghost in the Shell or Blade Runner, but I needed something to compel me along, and I was not able to find it.

    ★½

The filmification of old man deliriously yells at clouds, Megalopolis at least has some great performances to make up for its floundering narrative. The weighty dialogue often strays into the laughably self-indulgent for a rather simple theme it aims to progress. There are so many intriguing vignettes and enjoyable dialogues, but they are ridiculously disjointed and fail to make the viewer care.
