Whiplash 2014
it was interesting and pretty good throughout BUT you have to ignore one major thing, namely since when has playing fast = playing well?? like the whole premise is he's put through this physical torture to play super fast bc it means he's better but that's not how music works??
maybe it's meant to draw out how abusive and twisted the teacher is but the fact not a single character commented on it is so strange

My thoughts in roughly chronological order:
I liked the focus on their Judaism and the Gay/Jewish historical bond. Like everything in this film, it was all inferential and explicit but lead to some really powerful scenes. Esp the Magen David scene (the way his mom reacted to Elio wearing it and held it for him was VERY relatable and effective)
The fish scene was GROSS
Weird class dynamics maybe? Film doesn't really explore the whole very rich jewish family in…

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes 2023
This was a poor film. There was no chemistry between the two main pairings, the plot made no sense, and there was little payoff. Also so much unexplained but not in a cool mysterious way just like a meh vibe.
