    The Iron Claw

    ★★★½

Learning that this story was toned down from the true level of tragedy, and that a whole other brother was left completely out for the sake of the run time is wild.

    Hillbilly Elegy

    ★★★

An origin story of the 'pull-yerself-up-by-yer-bootstraps' type, Hillbilly Elegy follows JD Vance’s journey from struggling Appalachian kid to Yale Law grad. Glenn Close and Amy Adams turn in strong performances as poor, downtrodden Appalachians trying to survive their circumstances, but even they can’t shake the film’s overly polished, sanitized feel—a common issue I have with 'safe' biographical dramas (Walk the Line being the last). There’s potential for real emotional depth here, but the film never quite gets there. Not bad, but not particularly memorable either.

Influences from The Matrix, Night Watch, Sin City, and Donnie Darko shine through in this…

    John Dies at the End

    ★★★½

"John Dies at the End" does a good job of telling a pretty cohesive story while sticking closely to the book’s plot. Considering its non-linear timeline and Lovecraftian shenanigans, that’s no small feat and worth commending. It’s clichéd and goes without saying, but reading a book always feels more personal, with your imagination crafting scenes from your own creative perspective. With that in mind, the only letdown for me was the depiction of the other dimension’s backstory, which felt a…
