Paris, Texas 1984
"Just an ordinary trip down to the grocery store was full of adventure."
In what starts off as a meandering display of amnesia, Paris, Texas evolves into a wonderful, poignant tale about trying to board a ship that may have already sailed. My favorite aspect of this movie are certain sets and surroundings, as they perfectly synergize with the dialogue and mood. I am partial to scenes with extended periods of dialogue, and Paris, Texas has two scenes that elevate this film through its own ceiling.

Whiplash 2014
The lengths we are willing to go to reach our potential are explored in Whiplash. J.K. Simmons' performance is one of the best I've seen, and Miles Teller performs opposite of him with an incredibly physical performance. Whiplash is a visually compelling movie with an obligatorily great score.

Ocean's Eleven 2001
I'll always have a soft spot for scenes where a crew is assembled. With an amazing cast and concise writing, Ocean's Eleven is one of the most rewatchable films out there. The plan for the heist itself is surprisingly realistic, even though it would probably be impossible in the real world. My only nitpick with the plan is how easy it was for them to steal a certain component for the heist.

Drive 2011
Seeing the aerial view of Los Angeles pop onto the screen as Nightcall began to play really left an impression on me as someone who had just gotten into film at the time. While Gosling is not the most charismatic lead, most likely by design, he fits into the film seamlessly. With an all-time soundtrack, strong supporting cast, distinct ambiance and style, and quite possibly my favorite film opening of all time, Drive has remained my absolute favorite for years.
