the only topic this movie tackles in any semi efficient way is that of photojournalism and its complexities in war zones. beyond that, the stubborn apolitical stance the movie takes is unbearable. nothing lazier than telling the viewer “why fight? it’s so sad, look!” without acknowledging why so many are pushed into war to begin with. and of course it goes without saying, the movie said nothing regarding the current american political climate other than “look we’re so divided it’s so sad.” overall, the beautiful filming and efficient pacing failed to compensate for the feeling of nothingness i left the theater with

one of the first films on a tremendously horrific historical event that didn’t once make me think, “is this being too sympathetic toward the antagonist?” (think Oppenheimer, for example). and that’s a good thing, these people were fucking evil. these stories should be known and told, and i’m glad to have learned it.
