This movie is gratuitously depressing. The mise-en-scene is gorgeously gloomy, and the music consistently melancholy. It’s like watching a Hemingway novel. Guardian is a glance into the lives of the last two people monitoring salmon escapements in British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest, who are informally called guardians. I’m swearing off tuna because of this film. Bluefin is visually stunning: I had no idea how striking, how awe-inspiring, how colossal the bluefin tuna is. And I was blissfully unaware of the troubling history of commercial tuna fishing, and of how much these practices share with the hunting of terrestrial animals like deer, elk, and bison. The film also encourages the viewer to reflect on why these practices have gone unchallenged–because our bias as a terrestrial species gives us…
