Wong Kar-Wai does longing like no one else. In 2008, after having broken my own heart and moved to San Francisco, I watched every movie that came out. I guess I just missed this one.
There's always an aspect of longing that isn't maudlin, but people are so afraid of being maudlin, trite, shmalzy—overly invested in romanticizing desire and losing their cool, critical distance. [Are these people in the room with you now, Zoe?]
Anyway, it's nice to see Jude Law smoke a rolly while Cat Power's "The Greatest" plays extradiegetically and Norah Jones rolls up to eat blueberry pie and talk about keys.
