i actually enjoyed this more than i usually enjoy david lunch’s films - maybe because i allowed the film to wash over me more than trying to actually understand what was happening (which maybe speaks volumes!).

i thought the film was mostly about a childlike loss of innocence: falling in love for someone who doesn’t love you back, your dream career not being as good as you expected it to be.

that said, there’s a lot more to be gleaned from this film, but i’m just not sure i can be bothered to watch it again.

i think this may be my favourite film of 2023. barbie is really funny, sad, happy and generally just very entertaining.

watching the film, i think gerwig had to toe a very difficult and fine line as all artists do when it comes to feminism and feminist ideologies. central to this is the problem of pitting men against women - the initiative to make Kendom back into Barbieland which suggests that feminism is about women ruling over men as men…

i was actually pleasantly surprised, i really was expecting it to be terrible.

it did feel a little like a musical in places, just dropping in songs every few minutes but maybe that’s what the dylan fans wanted? it’s not really what i wanted, and, besides, if that is what i wanted, surely it would have just been better to go and listen to actual bob dylan?

i thought timothée chalamet did an okay impression of bob dylan and i liked hearing the joan baez songs. the film did just feel a bit pointless though, which left me feeling a bit flat.
