The Reader 2008
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
On my second viewing I’ve gained more understanding and appreciation for this film.
For a long time I couldn’t understand why the main characters remained silent about the truth. Then it all just clicked in my brain as I realised that it’s symbolic of the nation’s silence during the war.
Does silence or inaction make someone accountable for the actions of others? Just because something is immoral does not necessarily make it a crime in the eyes of the law. One thing at least is clear. Shame is a powerful and destructive thing.
