I didn't seem to like it as much as I thought I would. The premise here is great. I mean, bestie basically sells his soul for science so that he could become a lab rat. It opens the discussion for the ethics of such experiments and what would and wouldn't be morally justifiable if such cloning were to occur. I guess my main problem is that it leaves the discussion at "cloning=bad."

This works much better as a social commentary than a story about the lives of the characters. So, it's hard to be 100% into it when it's clearly supposed to be both.

This movie is so inventive in its take on a theme that may completely be overdone at this point. There is tons of art comparing being youthful to being old and vice versa, but nothing has ever done it quite like The Substance. It's written so bizarrely, but it's also so self-aware about it, which makes it feel very personal and raw.
