This movie is devoid of satisfaction. Paradoxically, the revenge seeker (Dae-Su) is actually exacting revenge upon himself through the manipulative tactics of his former classmate (Lee Woo-Jin). The imagery is visually striking - Dae-su eating the live squid.. Breaking out of the suitcase.. fighting through mobsters with a hammer in a narrow hallway. Lost Highway 1997
My favourite Lynch film. It's a complementary half to Mulholland Drive. There are plenty of different ways you can interpret this film, but all of them are less true to me than accepting the surreal and nonsensical dream for what it is - a dream. It's as if it's a puzzle that is constructed in order to tempt us to find meaning in it - and it almost fits - but we are left empty handed.
