    Vertigo

This film is only around 2 hours but feels twice as long. The first half is a relatively intriguing if not somewhat tedious mystery that hints at some potentially supernatural elements, and for the most part I was invested. The second half goes completely nuts and tears down what it had built up with a total shift in tone and plot to a point where it feels like a completely different film. A convoluted twist / reveal attempts to tie everything together but it was too haphazardly executed to garner any satisfaction from me. Vertigo mistakes confusion and shock for meaningful complexity.

War for the Planet of the Apes

    ★★★

Somewhat of a disappointing conclusion to the new planet of the apes trilogy. Dawn was a fantastic, thoughtful, emotional, and action packed sequel to Rise that successfully managed to raise the stakes and up the action of its predecessor while still managing to hold a convincing emotional core. And when War began I was really excited because the first third is absolutely fantastic, from the opening battle sequence to Caesar’s journey for vengeance. But once the second third of the…

    The Brutalist

    ★★★

The Brutalist almost stands as one of the great epics of the 21st Century for me, and maybe with more time or a rewatch it’ll get there. However, for now it unfortunately falls short.

The first half, titled The Enigma of Arrival, is nearly flawless. It’s a beautiful testament to the immigrant experience and the American dream. The progression of Tóth’s life from just after the 2nd World War to 1952 is wonderfully paced and has a great sense of excitement…

    Megalopolis

    ★★★

    Enjoy the show.

Wow. What a mess of a film. Going into it I knew parts of it would be completely incomprehensible even to the most sober of viewers. Yet I was still surprised at Megalopolis’ most absurd moments. The storytelling is also a mess at times, with moments of setup with no payoff and moments of payoff with no setup. What makes these shortcomings even worse are the moments of genuine goodness that shine through, making it seem as if…
