Fuck man. Fuck. Third episode rattled me in a way few pieces of media ever have. It viscerally re-opened so many old wounds of pre-teendom, the suffocating anxieties and insecurities that spring up seemingly from nowhere as you learn the violence of gender. the feeling of learning you're more than just a "person." I think the longer I sit with this, the more it'll grow on me. Very unpretentious, straightforward writing that takes its time saying exactly what it means with no metaphor or unnecessary sublety. I really liked that this wasn't a crisis of faith film, but a crisis of the church. One of the most brutal, miserable films I've ever seen. I'll say more about this at some point, right now I just have to recover.
I'm actually not totally sure what prompts a pretty rare 5 stars from me on this, but I really find it hard to fault a single aspect of this film. I can't stop thinking about it. It manages to juggle so many nuanced, layered themes in an immaculate, realistic script that hinges on a "murder mystery" that *spoiler* is never truly solved. Hooks you with mystique, and then sucker punches you with emotion that comes together all at once in the second half. A certain intense flashback scene in the final third will be burned into my brain forever. So creative, unique, and accomplished in execution.
