I think this is Sam Elliott’s best performance of his career. The supporting cast is stellar and I can see them in the roles they play as well.
For me, the western movie flashbacks and dream sequences add zero to the movie. Throughout the movie, when they appeared, I pictured them not in the movie and it made a better film in my mind. They serve no purpose. There’s enough Sam Elliott in the character that you already get “it.”…
I remember when this movie came out it got lots of press about all of the numerous MTV style camera shots. Seems a bit quaint now.

It’s a shame the movie was such an abject failure. The film tried to jam too much into the storyline when a more narrow focus may have been better in a movie.
