Mickey 17 2025
a great film that had the building blocks to be an amazing film. the cast are all having fun as the plot ricochets about, but the comedic and plot potential of Robert Pattinson as Mickey 17 and 18 was wayyyy underutilised as were the creepers. some similar themes to okja but way more zany. I enjoyed but wanted more!

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy 2025
I was told this was unexpectedly quite lovely and the people were right!
It did really feel like a proper bridget jones movie, not a shiny rehash without any soul that a lot of modern updates get (and the third once fell foul to).It felt thoughtfully and carefully crafted for mushy sentimentalists who perpetually rewatch the first two (guilty)
The detail of the blue cocktails, reindeer jumper, and even the set decoration really gave it emotional heft.Yeah just a really lovely trip to the cinema, made even better by a large glass of white wine and an M&S quiche.

Anora 2024
This is of course an artistically interesting, well shot film, and Mikey Madison's performance is well deserving of the awards recognition.
But... though the plot isn't inherently exploitative despite sex work being a key subject, the gaze of the camera felt like it was? Exploring a woman-centred story that involves an exotic dancer does not necessarily have to feel the weight of the male gaze, but for me this film really did (same issue as poor things and nosferatu maybe?).
Definitely glad I watched it for the central performance, but the longer I think about it the more uncomfortable I feel about it.Translated from by -
