Anxiety is back on the menu bois
The writing here is not amazing, some parts feel disconnected and could have probably just be taken out. In this respect, it feels a bit like a multi-course meal lacking some cohesion. On the other hand, the highs are very high and the directing is great (quite impressive with a 10 million budget). Ultimately this is the kind of movie you go to the cinema for.
Villeneuve recently expressed his dislike of dialogue in cinema. When you watch a movie like this, you understand what he means. Good dialogue makes you think, but cinema at its core is a sensory experience.
This movie exceeded all my expectations, and since I like comparisons; it might just be better than Lord of The Rings.
I haven't watched Breathless yet, but this seems to be the most relevant Godard film for now. It draws you in to watch the action and listen to what the characters ramble about more closely.
However, it is still more of the same: focus on technique and experimentation with the plot largely irrelevant. Some parts of it you will love, and others you will find unbelievably long and boring. Men tend to behave one way and women another. A pursuit…
