  profound loneliness. 

  the story is so sad and heart wrenching of a girl who is alone and life except her home and when those are possibly taken away from her she turns to an unlikely friend. it’s in the loneliness that she turns to a this friend for attention and companionship. as seen in the altered life of joan she is still seeking that only friendship.
