Never perhaps has there been a film that so perfectly exemplifies the beauty and maturity that can be expressed through animation than this film. The author of the original, semi-autobiographical short story this film is based on, Akiyuki Nosaka himself said that the story couldn't have been told any other way after seeing storyboards during production.

I have never seen a film be edited like this before, it’s like Wong Kar-Wai took the fast edits of Chungking express and dialed it up to 100, the way he plays with time is so interesting in that it’s so out there and so constant throughout the film it’s like he’s making his own reality, he’s like the anti Béla Tarr in that their camerawork and pacing are so singular they create their own realities, but they do so in the complete opposite ways.

Not to mention the black and white re-enactments are so outlandishly tasteless if it weren’t so disrespectful it would be hilarious.

There was a 5 minute tangent about what drugs do to…

Saw this film again at the BFI IMAX theatre, in special laser projection.

It felt like I had died and gone to heaven.

    Also Edgar Wright was there.
