Having never seen a Marx Brothers movie before now, I of course still knew of Groucho as a pop culture icon.; the walk, the cigar, the eyebrows and of course, that mustache.
So I fully expected to watch Duck Soup as an exercise; a study of historical comedy, that perhaps was no longer relevant or even funny. Was I ever wrong. Sure there’s a bit of overacting from the supporting cast, common for the era, but Groucho, Harpo and Chico…
I like heist movies. The impossible target, the specialized team, the planning, the flash-forward visualization of the execution...that formula works for me as long as the plot does not veer into “that just wouldn’t happen territory”, like the too slick Now You See Me...and Jesse Eisenberg is no where near the picture.
American Animals stays mostly true to that formula, while adding a documentary style telling, some very cool editing and some surprising depth of character.
Like Woody Allen himself, I tend to be nostalgic for yesteryear. In this case Woody Allen movies of the 70’s and 80’s, when he without a doubt was at the top of his game.
I think this movie can’t bear the weight of being a Woody Allen movie, with the built-in criticism it was bound to get. Allen just has too much baggage. It’s too bad, because Kate Winslett’s performance is amazing and the lighting is exceptional.
One of my favorite comedies of all time. I laugh out loud every time I see it. Peter Falk and Alan Arkin are perfect.
