Now that’s an action movie. Brutal, emotional, beautiful. Surprised me continually. Hope to see more of Dev Patel behind and in front of the camera.

Exactly the right proportion of disturbing, hilarious, and beautiful, this film kept its pace with an unabashed ferocity that kept my eyes fixed on every frame. Perfect casting, stunning production design, enrapturing cinematography. Every character felt like a caricature, yet exactly the sort of person you’d imagine walks the halls of old manors. Great to watch with an audience to gasp or laugh along with.
Warning for emetophobes.
After seeing this lauded as the best sci fi of 2023, I have to say I was disappointed. Visuals, production design, and sound design are awesome, but the writing wasn’t there in a potentially dangerous way. Avatar meets Westworld meets played-out storylines with nothing added to the current conversation around robotics and AI. Every character lacked dimension, and the worldbuilding was almost nonexistent for such a high-concept situation. What we did see of the world was needlessly xenophobic. A feel-good…
I could see what it was trying to do, and that was part of the problem. Heavy-handed visual metaphors, slow and arrhythmic pacing, and contour-only characters made up much of the rest. It’s the type of movie with a twist ending that makes everything (well, some things) make sense upon a second viewing, but nothing about it made me want to watch it again. It’s yet another near-future rumination about AI replacing us without any worldbuilding or contextualizing whatsoever. Why…
