  In being a story about deep discomfort, Love and Pop is a tricky one to evaluate.

  Anno makes this film out of curiosity and exploration, and those elements worked well for me. The disgust and inhumanity of the story beats are the point of his conversation between everyday otaku (a culture he helped shape) and the teen girls they fetishize (a culture he couldn't be further from).
