  the premise had me giggling at first but i was not giggling towards the end.

  i like how ordinary this film is. everything from the premise to the setting to the daily goings-on. i also liked this film for its sincerity and i thought the two leads were excellent. farrell more emotive and gleeson more stoic but both equally convincing. and even as the film grows slightly more depraved, i felt that i could connect with the very ordinary emotions that leads the two to act as they did.

  i felt a lot of feelings.

  the wholesome and vibrant first act makes the ensuing events all the more crushing. a lot of the atrocities occur off screen and so we are left to imagine a lot of what is happening, but fernanda torres’ acting is so good that watching her process the circumstances surrounding her husband is about as gut-wrenching as i reckon seeing the events from his perspective would be.(if that makes any sense). she does well at…

  a pretty bleak depiction of war, through the eyes of a child. feel like i grew numb to the horrors of this film at a certain point. it really was that horrific. don’t think i’ve ever seen a film quite like this. visually stunning, with some incredibly emotive performances. and a lot more stuff that i can’t really articulate quite yet.
