A possession movie centered around a human villain is a fresh angle at least.
This subgenre of film always seems to have a character who doesn't believe in the supernatural to scoff at, which I read as "believers" trying to get even for typically being the scoff-ee.
In many ways, The Conjuring 2 was made in the spirit (pun intended) of an action flick, but the cheap jump scares and generic creepy demon get old fast. Not bad exactly, but effectively indistinguishable from most horror films made in the last two decades.
Much like the dozens of high school essays I've read on the source material, the film is a jumbled mess in desperate need of revision.
