    First Reformed

    ★★★★½

    Why must we all suffer?
Is it right to bring children into this world?

Schrader’s First Reformed prompts us to discuss these questions and gives his own view through the intelligently crafted performances and the thought provoking script. First Reformed is fantastic. Reverend Toller (Ethan Hawke) works at First Reformed church facing pressure regarding its 250th reconsecration from the Abundant Life church. Which is much bigger and affluent than the First Reformed church. It clearly takes inspiration from Bergman’s Winter…

Eggers’ Nosferatu is my first viewing of a Nosferatu adaptation, so I haven’t got much to compare it too. Nonetheless I still enjoyed it. “We are here encountering the undead plague carrier... the vampyr... Nosferatu.” The cinematography was good. I loved the use of shadows, obviously taken from the 1922 German expressionism Nosferatu (F. W. Murnau). The shadow of the hand going across the city was particularly cool. I really enjoyed Punch-Drunk Love. I was intrigued and entertained the whole way through. The characters were continuously entertaining and interesting. I thought Adam Sandler was great along with Emily Watson and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I loved the sound design, it was amazing how clearly it reflects Barry Egan’s mind and how he thinks and feels. The score in particular completely opposes the typical use of a score and it used at random moments when perhaps the audience wouldn’t expect…

Yi Yi is truly fantastic, I didn’t really know what it was about before watching it, but it slowly turned into a 5/5⭐️ for me. Before watching I was slightly worried about the runtime but that quickly changed as the film progressed. I think Yi Yi used all of its runtime superbly and left a fantastic coming of age film. The film starts with a wedding and ends with a funeral. It breaks life down into stages and allows them…

    Captain America: Brave New World

Just pretty bad. Some very poor dialogue even for a marvel film. The cgi towards the end of the film was so bad it was funny. In summary it was a whole lot of nothing. I feel like nothing actually happened.
