Kiki is one of my favorite film characters ever. She is so determined to live up to her potential as a witch, yet never wrongs anyone to get to her goal. She takes the hard road time and time again. This eventually puts her into a depressive state, which is portrayed realistically for a "kid's film". Her eventual triumph to save the city is so heartwarming and satisfying after knowing her mental state was at an all time low just hours beforehand.

The debate on who is crazier is still in question for me-- teacher or student. Yes, Fletcher is borderline psychotic when it comes to his methods. The repeated grueling sessions he puts his musicians through is peak insane behavior. But Neiman only ever responds by going further, putting his own life in danger multiple times while alienating everyone around him. This movie finally reaches a conclusion in a single head nod, where Fletcher finally sees Neiman has reached his full potential as a musician in his 15 minute (Jesus) solo.

Love the ending. Almost feels like a sports movie.

A little all over the place for me. There were plenty of intriguing and creative plot points that felt overshadowed by a less significant detour just minutes later. The music and animation, while gorgeous in typical Miyazaki fashion, felt somewhat recycled from past Ghibli films.

I have only watched this one time-- it was on a flight where I had nothing better to do than try something I hadn't seen. An airplane movie has never captivated me like Eternal Sunshine and likely never will again! The slow reveal of the history between the former lovers is well played out and leaves a taste of anticipation for the conclusion. The soundtrack is gorgeous and the choice of shots creates the somber feeling throughout.
