After watching Stage Fright and the sect, I was really looking forward to The Church. While the film is quick to rush to 100% crazy, I felt a little let down by this one. There's a definitely lack of menace in the film, which doesn't help the generally formulaic story and poor acting and dubbing. Certainly some crazy imagery to be seen here, including a monster worthy of the shunting, but it all comes away feeling a bit empty in the end.

Transylvania 6-5000 1985
Generally unfunny and completely uninterested in the horror parts of its concept. I felt like most of the time I was laughing awkwardly at the film, rather than it actually making me laugh. There were a few chuckles here and there, but mostly this film is just baffling. There's a decent list of character actors in this cast, and Goldblum proves to be fun and affable, but they're really given nothing to work with here. Give this one a pass.

The Sect 1991

Man, this movie has everything. It's creepy, scary, mysterious, gross, has explosions and dudes on fire, and even namechecks a lovecraft diety. Basically "what if Rosemary's Baby was insane?" but really a lot of fun. I kept waiting for it to get lame, and, except for maybe the last minute where the resolution feels a bit unearned, this thing is bonkers fun. I mean, I think Jamie Lee Curtis's sister had sex with a bird, who is probably the devil, at one point. Like I said, nuts.

Very much enjoyed this one. Great characters, cool creature design, a few moments of levity, and lots of tension. The scene where the characters are hiding in the house as blood pours down on them is an incredible piece of horror. I think my favorite thing is how the film uses lighting in its nighttime scenes with it's black characters. It's cinematography worthy of some of the best noir. All the cast are good, but Michael Wincott steals the show here.
