  I really, really enjoyed this movie. The cinematography, the plotting, the characterization, even the music, Park's interplay of drama and comedy–all amazing.

  Which is why the sex scenes gut me. For a movie celebrating love between women, the male gaze is abundantly apparent, especially in the last sex scene which implodes the movie's theme.

  There are so many things I like about this movie: the themes of black girl excellence, familial expectations, adolescent growth, and vulnerability; the world of Haldwell and its five factions; and the engaging cinematography.

  That's what guts me about this movie. It had all of these promising aspects but ultimately fails to deliver. Instead of honing in on these aspects, the movie frequently jumps around. There are so many one-off scenes that introduce new ideas at the expense of the others…
