first full rewatch after many many years: first time i noticed how (bad) dreamlike the sets are, so one-note brown and suffocatingly enclosed -- newman and redford are (newsflash) terrific together, with lots of solid little minor parts along for the ride
the notion that the scope and the realms of the scam are just infinitely expansive is hugely entertaining if only as a figure for the rugpull that all of hollywood and the rest of the entertainment-industrial complex has always been committing itself to etc etc… with ragtime less an anachronism than a figure for the earliest backdrop-manifestation of same lol (actually not joking here)

so this was will smith's first blockbuster, and casting him in this centralish role had seen a bigwig battle of the racists behind the scenes. not bad per se, he's very muted, cocooned by the piety all round him -- compare eg MIB, his very next film -- and also by the mostly feebly rote leavening humour intended to offset and puncture the piety, which is more often [sketched idea for joke here] than actually funny pay-off.
