I stumbled across this movie on Mubi, and had never heard of it although it was released in 2016. I've seen the lead actor in a recent award winning Chinese movie set in more recent decades (Ash Is The Purest White) and thought maybe they could teach him movie-fu fighting to pull it off. I read this story the summer before 8th grade and I've loved it ever since. A great opportunity to introduce new audiences to this classic Stephen King story (his second novel) was wasted trying to cram it all in as a movie. This was a long rich story and these days people like a good mini series so I don't know how this happened. At this point, go read the book!
To be clear, this was my third rewatch at home after having seen it opening night in the theater, and it always amazes me. It's truly a masterpiece in visual storytelling and film editing and just everything about it. Despite the color and amazing action sequences, it feels like the best of silent movies and this story can be told with no spoken dialogue.
