Feeling pretty confused after this. I think the movie aimed to hold up a mirror to the audience, exposing its perversions, but I didn’t feel targeted by its critique at all. The soft porn and gore were off-putting from the start. It relied too heavily on the very elements it was criticizing to drive the narrative, which only reinforced the conflict. As a result, the campiness didn’t land for me. What was likely intended as a clever double layer came across as smug and self-indulgent.
