Pezold delivers three dark, mysterious characters bound together in a hierarchy shaped by work and romance.

What I like about this film is the sense of shame shared between the Thomas and Laura, two characters hiding their tryst from Ali, Laura’s husband and Thomas’ boss who helps him reintergrate into German society after an dishonorable discharge from Afghanistan. We never know what Thomas’ dishonor, which to me is a missed opportunity in knowing his character.

The male characters have a saviour complex attitude towards Laura who has shameful past and the way to redeem her from it is through their menacing libido.

A delicious film that affirmed in me that this is how I wanna be loved. From the food, sound, image, the warm light in the chateau’s kitchen, to the sacred romance between Eugenie and Dodin. I found myself salivating over that gorgeous food, taking mental notes on some of the gourmet techniques practiced. Did this film unlock a gastronomy fetish within me?

Within the franchise, this one did nothing. Blasé.

I got nauseous watching this and had to catch some fresh air to continue watching it. Overwhelming images of organs, blood, and body fluids. This film operates on a visual abstraction that only becomes clear when the camera zooms out of these patients insides. It’s somatically repulsive, bringing you closer to gushy parts of us that we never see, but sometimes feel, and also, some primal anxieties like castration.
