Well, I like Nolan and what he’s going for generally, but this is objectively sloppy relative to his previous work. While fun, there’s too much noise, too much talking, and too much plot (and one particular hole that had me throwing up my hands). Dude needs to hang back a bit and just let us enjoy the experience. Washington, Pattinson, Debicki, and Branagh are all great though and time travel was never this visually interesting.
I’m an ardent Malick fan and I’m glad to see him returning to more coherent, linear storytelling. Of all his late output, this is probably the most accessible but it’s really more effective overall. Franz’s narrative is one worth telling and it’s especially well suited to Malick’s style and vision with a bit of “traditional restraint.”
This is a beautiful film, touching on problems and questions that are still relevant now, with such poeticism and grace that make it a cinematic prayer. I always come out of a Malick as if spiritually cleansed.
Lynch is Lynch and you reach a point where you kinda just take him or leave him. Lost Highway is particularly guilty of stylistic exhibition though so while the design, soundtrack, and imagery are definitely interesting—nobody can accuse this man of being boring—I’m not convinced it’s actually good.
