The characterization and themes in this sucker are *chef's kiss.* Every action feels inevitable, and there's no cruelty that suspends disbelief. Ali's and Sae-Beok's final episodes are heavy, heavy hitters.
I'd seen a few scenes of this show when it came out but for some reason never watched the whole thing through until now.
The performances of the VIPs holds this back, but thankfully they weren't in it all that much. And there's probably still something to be said for their having the most soulless dialogue/acting in the series.
This was one of those countless movies that was just on 'in the background' when I was a kid, and I've never seen both halves of it together until now. Even knowing what was coming in some scenes, letting the tension ratchet up from the beginning made all the difference. The dread and suspense in this movie are phenomenal in the final act especially, but the relentless strobe lighting during the climax sure is an issue.
