    A Tribute to Gene Hackman

This movie has a very special place in my heart and film viewing history. I first saw it during my first year of grad school at UCLA. It was shown as part of a series showcasing great LA films that coincided with a screening of Tom Anderson’s excellent documentary, Los Angeles Plays Itself.

Fun Philip Marlowe tale with the detective bouncing from suspect to suspect in search of missing rare coin.

Marlowe has some good quips and the final reveal scene is a hoot.

The film features many scenes with the gusty winds that are part of the Los Angeles experience and were whipping around the night I watched this, adding to the atmosphere.

There are some killer stunts here with bodies flying everywhere. Great performance from the two leads and an epic finale filmed at the iconic Watts towers.

On 35mm at The New Beverly. A pristine, gorgeous print.

A Hammer crime film with excellent performances from Morell as the suave mastermind and Cushing as his unwilling accomplice. It’s fascinating to see Cushing’s character transform from the stern, officious bank manager to quivering pawn manipulated expertly by the thief.

Add this one to your Christmas watchlist, it is superb.
