This film earns exactly one star for the final scene, which is so utterly bizarre (after over an hour of content that made me want to hack my brain out with a rusty spoon) it was almost refreshing.

The Wrestler 2008
tldr: I had no idea this film would be as breathtaking as it was. Everything is perfect. Great acting that pulls on all your sympathies and a style that wavers between film and documentary.
Notes on the actors:
- Rourke is perhaps too personally familiar with being beyond his time but he uses this to his advantage in the scenes where the awkwardness of real life clashes with the perceived glamour of being in the limelight.
- Evan Rachel Wood…Translated from by

There Will Be Blood 2007
I still don't know what this film is actually meant to be about, but I will never forget the use of colour and landscape shots. It's hard to claim that Daniel Day Lewis can't top this role (because he can, he will and he has), but this is clearly one of Paul Dano's seminal moments.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus 2009
This is one of those Gilliam films that I completely understand people not liking it. Gilliam is a surrealist trapped in mainstream cinema confines at the best of times but considering Heath Ledger managed to die during filming (a huge tragedy beyond all words), the fact that this was ever a finished project is a miracle.
I didn't care much for the friends that filled in for him, but the fantastical world that Gilliam created in combination with the classic fairytale makes this a worthy but casual view. Not as good as Tideland, Brazil or Twelve Monkeys, but something you should squeeze in when you can.
