If I had to pick a single film that cemented Richard Linklater's place as one of the greats of modern American cinema, it would without a doubt be Boyhood. This film is, without hyperbole, a masterpiece, the climax of Linklater's epic filmography.

Like Slacker, Dazed and Confused, and Everybody Wants Some!!, Boyhood makes use of Texas as a microcosm, this time paying attention to the titular boyhood and more broadly American life from the early 2000s. At the same time,…

After spending a few days somewhere in Northern Italy, a review of one of my favorite films of all time now seems especially warranted.

Despite having watched Call Me by Your Name multiple times, I admittedly only got around to finishing the source material while I was in Crema, where several scenes were shot around the city and surrounding countryside. Having done so, I remain in awe as to how beautifully Luca Guadagnino brought André Aciman's novel to life. Owing both to…

Despite my love for A24, I haven’t been nearly as hyped for another new release in a while. Civil War exceeded all of my expectations and I will remember it as one of the most haunting films I have ever seen.

A second American civil war could be approached in a plethora of ways, and I appreciated the choice of exploring the conflict from the perspective of journalists. The film is full of brief moments and exchanges that encourage reflection on…

My comfort Scream movie; in part because it was my introduction to the franchise, but also because it’s the only one in the series that’s relatable (1-3 came out before I was born) and directed by Wes Craven. The balance of horror and humor is just right and the killer reveal is my favorite after the original.

Although this is only my third film of his, Villeneuve is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors.

Many of the qualities that previously impressed me — stunning cinematography, masterful storytelling, his skill at building suspense and delivering a twist ending — are present in Prisoners, and executed just as well as in Arrival and Dune. Villeneuve's talent as a filmmaker clearly carries across genres and I’m looking forward to exploring the rest of his filmography, as well as what’s to come.
