Immediate response is that it's a great encapsulation of the modern American (male) existence: extreme loneliness and there's no way out. Conventional professional success, nuclear family, parenthood, sexual pleasure, etc. nothing solves the loneliness problem. For me personally, I see so many ways out but the protagonist just couldn't. It's also annoying how these women were so attracted to him for his "talent" or social status, and are so willing to start fleshy transaction that benefits no one.
