It's awesome solely for the fact that it puts a new, unique spin on the generally fossilized zombie cinema. I like the idea that the infected are perfectly capable, intelligent beings that beside having removed all traits that a human can be colloquially described as 'civilized' due to the virus are no different from healthy people they chase and kill.
Other than that, its depth surprised me story and thematic wise for it essentially being a splatter film. Rarely do I see movies which main shtick is guts, gore and depravation that allow that many of different, multi layered readings.
