The Witch 2015
Impressive directorial debut from Robert Eggers! Great casting, specifically Ralph Ineson, whose voice can only be described as a cacophony of gravel and chain smoking, and Anya Taylor-Joy who killed it in one of her first big roles.
The movie's plot itself is not so substantial in itself. The real joy is just experiencing the unrelenting bleakness and despair of the wonderfully dark atmosphere of the film. A clear stepping stone stylistically to his most recent (and excellent) work, Nosferatu, Egger's use of lightning, music, dialogue, and cinematography left me consistently unsettled and and unenvious of these poor puritan bastards for the length of the film.
