Yes, it's basically hyper-stylized American propaganda but this movie accomplishes everything it sets out to do and does it well. Heartfelt characterizations from top-notch actors and fantastic action set pieces prove that the MCU was learning from its mistakes in Phase 1 and growing into the biggest modern movie franchise.
While in some ways Kenneth Branagh is an odd choice for a superhero movie, the gravitas he brings transforms the Sword in the Stone, fish out of water tale into a Shakespearean tragedy at the intersection of Thor, Loki, and Odin's worst decisions. Thus, the final conflict is much more intimate and one we care about, finally solving MCU Phase One's third act problem. Iron Man 2 wants to be an action-packed blockbuster with a vulnerable look at a dying man trying to pretend he's not afraid. The heartbreak is it absolutely succeeds at the latter, but the subpar action set pieces and forgettable antagonists drag every memorable performance down. In no superhero movie should I be waiting for the superheroics to stop, but I absolutely was.
The first half of this movie is breathtakingly good. Unfortunately, it relies far too much on putting a damsel into stress that eventually it just gets tiresome. I wish they gave the Hulk as much development as they gave Bruce Banner, a problem that I'm glad they fix in later movies.
