File Under: Formulaic Found Footage That Still Delivers
There is nothing ground breaking about this found footage staple, but the real set and creepy clown costume of the main haunt help to create some tense moments. As a fan of the genre I enjoyed this one but was never surprised, impressed, or startled by a specific scene.

File It Under: Effective found footage with a few missteps.
The atmosphere, setup, and setting of this found footage horror is incredible. However, what lurks in the abandoned tunnels had some big misses for me. At some points the terror of the tunnels looked shrouded and ambiguous but very scary. In other scenes they showed it too much under a light and the quality did not hold up. If they removed a few of the sighting and stuck with the effective, darker reveals it would have hit harder.

File if Under: Breathes New Life Into a Beloved Franchise
I loved this movie. I love this franchise. The 90s VHS movies were a step back in some regards but I truly believe 85 brought everything I wanted to see to this terrific, and important found footage anthology series. Found footage and anthology horror are two foundational genres for modern horror and the teams behind VHS are on the Mt. Rushmore of both. The gore is particularly effective and the stories are engaging and well paced.

File it under: Classic 2000s comedy

This is the epitome of the 2000s era comedies. It’s raunchy, silly, and has an all star cast of comedic actors. This particular movie is one of my favorites of the genre. It is a high quality production with a sense of comedy that probably wouldn’t be reproduced today in terms of tone and low brow kicks.
