  My affection for the source material didn't quite get me over the hump on this viewing, but it had made me want to re-read the book because I remember a few scenes and wonder what was lost in translation, or if it's just fundamentally unfilmable.

  Silly and fun. I think I mostly watched it for the "Ruprecht" interlude this time around. It's another time capsule movie, with the broad score and Steve Martin still doing the kind of physical comedy he'd built his brand around in the '70s and early '80s.

  1998 is about the right year for this: A refined, well made spy movie with a great cast and a clean, old-school, non-color-graded, straight-ahead aesthetic. 1999 was such a turning point year for movies, and this feels sort of like a swan song for a simpler time.
