Fertile Memory 1980
One of the most important films I've seen. Intertwining the personal and the political, showing the intersections of oppression, colonialism and displacement, patriarchy and female identity. The camera is put on the everyday; the music, preparing meals, the interior of the home. But as much as the focus is zoomed in, what is focused on shows us the struggle at large, through poetry and music, through conversations, through landscapes. My heart breaks knowing the present, knowing the evil being unleashed…

Desert Hearts 1985
A tender lesbian love story about newly found desire and self-discovery. It's slow burning but becomes exhilarating. The desert offers relief and space to breathe, slowly unwinding a constrained Vivian. Bodies giving permission to let desire run free, while images of wide-open desert space and running horses reflect her new-found freedom.
