Spoor 2017
Anti-poetic, pedantic and deeply, deeply stupid flattening of Tokarczuk’s wondrous exploration of one very peculiar individual’s subjectivity and consciousness, and her profoundly ambiguous relationships with her social and environmental worlds. The film’s amplification of the novel’s politics, and jettisoning of those ambiguities, exists only to obscure how shoddily and unreflectively the pieces are put together here. Truly awful.

Three initial observations on Memoria:
1. The bifurcation found in Weerasethakul’s early films returns here, albeit in much more subtle ways. The first half in many ways resembles an auteur genre piece (think The Assassin or The Man from London), and while Tourneur has been mentioned often, an equally apt point of reference would be the supernatural thrillers of Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
