The film kept ramming feminism-lite ideas and trying to sell Barbie as a feminist icon, even though it is ultimately a marketing ploy. It never pushes through its points effectively enough and suffers from a disjointed narrative. It is quite a fun watch and Ryan Gosling is a hoot but it’s not the masterpiece the trailers or some reviews make it out to be.
Greta Gerwin previously made such delightful films about female friendship and relationships in the past with Little Women and Ladybird so I expected this to be special but came away disappointed.
