Daniel Plainview, protagonist. Weaker viewings of this film invite lazy comparisons to American capitalism in the 18th, 20th, and 21st century. You could say this is a "period piece" because it involves objects in the physical world of the 20th century, such as trains, clothes, and oil. These are fine and well executed,but the film would only justify a few viewings if the things that were focused on were only these made this explicit.
