It’s SO GOOD. Go watch it! I have more to say, but at the moment, this is the most I can muster.
I love movies like this! I love movies that speak volumes about social justice, politics, and humanity by telling an emotionally evocative story. And damn, this movie does that. Manoj’s story speaks to some of biggest issues India faces: classism, wealth inequality, generational poverty, unequal access to education, and political corruption. Moreover, the movie evokes emotion after emotion: anger, sadness, despair, relief, and joy. It is flawed at times, sloppily switching between scenes, utilizing dialogues that make a point but…
The stories had their moments and the actors did a fantastic job. However, there were moments where the gore, nudity, and sex seemed to be there just to be there. At times, the characters lacked depth and the plots had holes, making the stories less compelling. The visuals were cool though and the movie draws you in. My ranking of the stories: the first one was my favorite and the second one my least favorite. The third one was a mixed bag for me but there was more to like than in the second one.
I loved watching this movie! I got to watch it in a theater in Fremont with a friend who grew up in the area, so it was cool to see the Fremont peeps collectively recognizing and reminiscing over locations.
To me, Joan Chen was a highlight. She did such a wonderful job playing Didi’s mom, and I found myself invested in her character throughout the film. So, of course, she made me cry at the end :’) It was awesome…
