For all its impeccable cinematography and artful production design, this shiny new Blade Ranner proves to be a pointless retread of ideas much better investigated elsewhere. It’s long and tiring and utterly, unnervingly soulless.
In sharp contrast to the 1995 anime, and all great sci-fi films, this new Ghost in the Shell has a thoughtless, ill-considered feel that not even Johansson's considerable talent can overcome. It is downright heartbreaking to witness this level of VFX craft wasted on such an insultingly hollow narrative. Starts strong but runs out of gas fast. Wright's camera whips and pans around, creating an illusory sense of momentum. Some of the sequences are masterful to be sure, but there isn't enough here to sustain a feature.
Homecoming is the best Spider-Man movie yet. Holland is perfectly cast and the tone is just right. Some of the action only gets halfway to being interesting but that's easy to overlook when the rest has so much going for it. Also worth noting that this is probably the most accessible Marvel film since the first Iron-Man - very little hinges on prior knowledge of the MCU. That said, there are plenty references and easer eggs for fans. All in all, a major success.
